In this chapter a TRAGEDY happens to the family that changes their lives. Chin which is Ba's policeman husband, comes on a bicycle one day to tell the family the news. The news was, "'Cau chet roi. (Our father is dead.) He was found this morning on the ground outside his house. He tried to kill himself by drinking acid'"(204).This is terrible news for the family, they have lost a father, husband, and loved one. Death is never good news that is why this is a tragedy for Le Ly and her family. Death is same view that same way in today's world. People are afraid of dying and often fear of death in general. Death comes in all different shapes and sizes and most of them are tragedies. These tragedies are hard for people get over; they were then and they still are.

A Question of Faith, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"-PERSONIFICATION

Le Ly who was often called Bay Ly writes about a time when she hears the voice of her father who is not really with her. The voice of her father gives PERSONIFICATION to things throughout the message that he is trying to send to her. She writes, "Bay Ly, Bay Ly- another, deeper voice murmurs in the wind, tickling my cheeks with feathery fingers.My little peach blossom- haven't you learned yet that fate or luck or god works in its own way, and reveals its secrets in its own time? When has it ever paid you to turn your face from life? Keep your faith, Bay Ly: Look those deepest, darkest, most terrible fears in the face and learn the lessons they've come to teach-"(193). This is a important message to Le Ly that her father sends her. She is having a rough time with life right now, but these words give her hope and a pushed to change her life. Sometimes our parents give us very knowledgeable words and they repeat them so often that they stay with us. We often keep the words of wisdom for later use. Le Ly's father gives her words of wisdom that she finds when she truly needs them. These words are gifts from our parents to help us learn and understand life. When we remember them and use them during times of need.

Losing Love, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"- TONE

Sau Ban is Le Ly's brother and he gets married in this chapter, but goes off to fight with the Viet Cong. Le Ly's TONE throughout this chapter is sad but tries to be hopeful for the future. She writes, ". . .I found I could not be alone without missing my brother terribly. When I sat outside in the evening, his face was in the moon and his voice was in the rustling trees. When I did my chores, I felt his helping hand on my rake and heard his careless laugh in the calling birds. When I closed my eyes to go to sleep, I felt cold where my soul had been warmed by Sau Ban's sunny spirit"(155). Le Ly's TONE is so sad in this chapter because she misses her brother. It is hard to let a love one leave you when it comes to fighting in a war. This is still common is our culture because loved ones leave everyday to go fight for our freedom. It is hard to let them go and you miss them terribly when they are gone, but they will always be with you when they are gone. Le Ly shows us this with hows she reacts when he brother is gone. This reaction is normal for most people too when a loved one has left them. You feel like you are losing love in your life because they are gone.

Losing the Way, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"- TURNING POINT

Le Ly went to be a maid/house keeper for a well to do family. Le Ly and the father of the family, Anh, falls in love while she is the maid. Le Ly writes about what her mother thinks about mistress and how she dosen't understand what to do, "She couldn't see how it broke my heart to be caught in this dilemma-to accept Anh's love, wrong another woman, and endanger his fine family; or reject him and not only risk our own position but lose this small bit of happiness I had finally found in life. What was I to do?"(129). This chapter is one of the TURNING POINTS in Le Ly's life. She does accept Anh and later on has Anh's child. This situation happens in today's world too. The action is bad because it is a sin to commit adultery, but does not mean it does not happen still. People are often put in sticky situations because they do not know what to do with her life. Le Ly actions are not the first in the world and most likely the last too.

Le Ly was arrested in this chapter for the first time but not the last. She was arrested with others and torture. Le Ly uses LITOTES throughout this chapter to show how the she was a prisoners but lucky in some cases. Le Ly writes, "The ride to Don Thi prison was unpleasantly familiar. I prayed that my old tormentors would not be on duty when I arrived-especially Sergeant Hoa. I hoped I would be kept in the arrival area instead of the awful cages, and that my sister Ba's policeman husband could be summoned from Danang before I was called from interrogation. To my surprise all my wishes came true"(73-74). Le Ly is lucky in this case because she is not tortured so much when she is arrested this time. This statement tells you of some of the ways prisoners were treated during war times. This still happens in the world today and people often do not know about it. Being a prisoners during war is scary, but could be lucky at times too. Many average people suffered during the war times because of the evil that is around them.

Fathers & Daughters, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"-NARRATIVE

Le Ly Hayslip talks about the times her father taught her things about life, living, and surviving. She and her father had a good relationship. She writes, "This was unheard of-- a father doing these things with a child that was not a son! Where my mother would instruct me on cooking and cleaning and tell stories about brides, my father showed me the mystery of hammers and explained the customs of our people"(29). This quote shows a how this book is a NARRATIVE. This is a story about Le Ly's personal life. This quote shows how Le Ly was taught by both of her parents. This shows the relationship she had with her dad too. One can tell by this quote that customs have not really changed in today's world. Mothers teach their children especially daughters how to take care of a household. Fathers teach their children how to survive with what they have and use tools to fix things. Both parents past down traits they have to their children. This is still the way in today's world.

Coming Back, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"-FLASHBACK

This book starts out with a FLASHBACK. The first chapter is about the author's birth. She was only 2 pounds when she was born and her family thought she was not going to survive. The book goes along with telling about her life as a child and how their family survived with little that they had. Her family worked on the rice farm that they lived on and owned.This chapter is a FLASHBACK because she lives in America in present time but goes back to Vietnam and the book starts out with how she started her life in Vietnam. Le Ly writes in this chapter, "Coming back always sets things straight"(24). This statement is important because you can tell that she has had a rough life and need to go home to set things right. This quote is related to real life because most people in there life has to go back to one part of their life and set things right with their self and others. The past is always fulled with regret and hard times which we need to forgive and forget about.
