Letting Go, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"- RESOLUTION
Le Ly came home to Vietnam from America so she could let go of her past and not feel so bad about the way she left her homeland. This is the last chapter of the book and the RESOLUTION of it too. She writes, "For a glistening instant, Ky La dances before my eyes, then vanishes into memory"(362). Her life in Vietnam and the village of Ky La is only a memory with her now. She has let go of her past life in Vietnam and has moved towards her new life in America. This ending is sad but happy because she has to leave the only family she has ever known but she knows she will have a better life in America with her sons. People still have to let go of their past lives to live in the present and future lives. This has not changed for people in today's world. Letting go is painful but going forward is life.
Finding Peace, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"-TOPIC
Le Ly's mother, Mama Du, tells Le Ly what she has learned from her daughter. The TOPIC that Mama Du is trying to teach Le Ly is she needs to find peace in what she has. Mama Du says, "'See what you've taught me, Bay Ly? That you're never too old to forgive people; that it's never too late to patch the dike and save a little more of whatever life's left you'"(337). These words that Mama Du spoke are meaningful; you need to find peace and happiness in your life now. Be present in life it is never to late for you to do something with your life. Life might be short but it does not mean you do not have time to forgive, love, and live. When you are still living you need to have peace with yourself, so if that means forgiving your enemy than do it. You will not have a happy life unless you find peace within your life.
Finding a Family, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"- ANECDOTES
Le Ly ANECDOTES the time she is reunited with her family. She us very happy to see them because she was away from them for so long. She writes, "Inside, my mother and Hai greet us and we sit down to Tinh's long-delayed supper of mi quang, chop suey, rice soup, spiced beef, boned chicken, and slivered pork. We have been gabbing for half an hour about our tour of the countryside. . ."(312). Le Ly is so happy to meet up with her mother again. They talk about her journey of getting to Vietnam and they just enjoy the time they have with each other now. Le Ly takes notes of this meeting with her mother. Family is the most important thing in life I believe you need to cherish the time you have with your family members. Le Ly does just that in this chapter. It is good to reunite with your family members and to enjoy the time you have with them. Life is short so try to live life to the fullest; sharing time with family members is one way to achieve this goal.
Almost in Paradise, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"- SIMILE
Le Ly got a job at the hospital in Danang and she loves it. She uses SIMILES in this chapter a couple of times and says that the hospital was like a day in paradise. Le Ly also makes a comment to herself about the way she feels about the people at the hospital. She writes, "This is heaven! I thought. Strangers come to solve your problems even before you ask for help!"(275). She continues to talk about the hospital like it is a paradise and heaven because that atmosphere is new to her. Le Ly does not have a perfect life right now even working in the hospital, even though it feels like she does, but the job makes her happy. Being happy under horrible circumstances is a good thing to do in life. Make the best of what you have is a good saying in today's world.
Power on Earth, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"-APHORISM
Le Ly talks to Anh, the father of her first son, in this chapter. Anh says some powerful words to Le Ly. He says; "'Overcoming our pain from the war. Learning to trust when we're afraid. Learning to honor the past while letting go of it at the same time. These are the things you came to Vietnam to learn, Bay Ly- isn't that so? Perhaps it's your turn now to teach'"(273). Anh uses APHORISM in this quote. This quote is important because Anh explains to Bay Ly that she has been taught all of her life about how to live, behavior, and love. Anh is saying that it is Le Ly's time to change things and teach others how to live, behavior, and love. She is a very knowledgeable person and people can learn great things from her. The best way to share the knowledge and wisdom she has it to teach it to others. Younger generations in today's world need to learn from the older generations, but the older generations need to teach them. Our life works out the way it should when we learn from others. People have lived before us and has survived so we know what we can do too. Teaching and learning help the world go around.
Daughters & Sons, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"-THEME
This chapter talks about family and how younger generations are experiencing the war at a different levels. One THEME in this book is death. This war is causing many deaths. Le Ly writes, "In a way, Ky La had spawned its own 'lost generations': brothers and sisters who had never known love, family rituals, and peace- only terror, starvation, and war. I wondered how many would know how to survive when the shooting finally stopped"(239). This quote has a strong message about what evil, which is the war, has done to the country of Vietnam. Ky La, the village Le Ly and her family lived in, was no longer like the home they once know. There is evil in the village just like in today's world, where the war is or has been there is also evil. War is a powerful and dangerous thing for the people that around or in the war. This chapter explains how daughters and sons are experiencing a whole different world from their parents. There are generations that are not longer living because of the war. This is still happening in today's world and will always happen as long as we have evil in the world.
Sisters & Brothers, Le Ly Hayslip, "When Heaven And Earth Changed Places"- PARENTHETICAL
In this chapter, many of the family members are coming together to help each other. Some of the brothers and sisters of Le Ly's family is reuniting too.PARENTHETICAL is used in this chapter to explain words and actions. Bon which is Le Ly's eldest brother says, "'Co Bay!' (Miss Number-Six 'Aunt'!) He uses the ceremonial form of greeting- one reserved for distant relatives-rather than the familiar em bay for number-six sister" (229). Le Ly explains and shows her brother greets her and the way he should greet her. Greeting people is different in all cultures and is still that way today. Greeting someone a certain way shows respect but could also show disrespect towards that person. Bon is showing respect to his sister even though Le Ly says he does not need to be so formal.
